Hernia repairs are the most frequently performed general surgery throughout the entire world. With more than 20 million hernia repairs occurring annually worldwide, hernia repair is indeed the most common general surgical operation.
Many people believe that hernias are not a woman's health issue. In fact, women can develop hernias. Hernias in women can cause chronic pelvic pain, and hernia repair is very effective at eliminating the cause of this pain. "Most women are surprised when diagnosed. People don't realize almost as many women as men are treated for hernias" says Christopher Boynton, MD, Virtua Memorial Hospital chief of general surgery.
The PROCEED Surgical Mesh is used for the repair of hernias and other fascial deficiencies that require the addition of a reinforcing or bridging material to obtain the desired surgical result. The Mesh is made of a thin, oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) bioresorbable fabric layer that effectively separates its strong, supportive mesh from underlying viscera. It is placed in the intra-abdominal cavity. A voluntary recall was issued by Ethicon, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson, due to unacceptable levels of delamination in lots manufactured after August 1, 2005. The following adverse effects were reported:
- infection
- inflammation
- bowel fistula formation, and
- extrusion
