Background Information
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning health care professionals and patients that about a serious form of kidney failure (acute phosphate nephropathy) has been associated with the use of oral sodium phosphate (OSP) products (e.g., Fleet Phospho-soda solution, Fleet Accu-Prep solution, and Visicol tablets) and their generic competitors. OSP products are commonly used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy, radiographic procedures, and surgery. There have been mutiple documented cases of kidney failure. You can view the FDA Report here.
If you have taken any of these products and think you have been harmed, you are urged to contact the law offices of Audet & Partners at 800.965.1461 to speak to an attorney. OSP products have been used for years and have generally been considerd safe. However, about 15 years ago, Fleet began promoting a doubledose regimen specifically for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopies and colon surgery. The FDA has not certified the double-dose regimen. In fact, FDA issued an alert to doctors and patients in May of 2006 warning that it had documented 21 cases of kidney failure associated with Fleet Phospho-soda and its generic competitors.
According to the Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography both single and double-dose sodium phosphate resulted in excellent colonic cleansing, without any significant differences.
