A contraceptive patch is a transdermal patch applied to the skin that releases synthetic estrogen and progestin hormones to prevent pregnancy. They are thought to have the same effectiveness as the contraceptive pill. Currently the only publicly available contraceptive patch is marketed under the brand name Ortho Evra. Contraceptive patches are often referred to by the slang term "the patch".

The Patch has been associated with higher rates of strokes and thrombosis than combined contraceptive pills.

Introduction
Ortho Evra Numerous women have filed lawsuits against the makers of the Ortho Evra birth control patch ("Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals") after doctors diagnosed the women with severe blood clots and other life-threatening complications.

Ortho Evra is an adhesive patch that prevents pregnancy by delivering the hormones estrogen and progestin through the skin. In September 2006, the FDA approved new label information for Ortho Evra after a study showed that women using the patch were twice as likely to experience blood clots as those who used a traditional contraceptive pill. The FDA has called for additional testing.

In fact, news articles allege that "[s]erious health problems have been associated with Ortho Evra including fatal and non-fatal blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, and death. From April 2002 to December 2004, over 27,974 "adverse effects" were reported by users of Ortho Evra. Many of the complaints are serious, and the patch is alleged to be responsible for over 23 deaths, including the death of 14 year old Alycia Brown".
