Website Gift Cards, Gift Certificates, Vouchers, and Coupons
Both federal and state laws apply to so-called "gift cards," "gift certificates," "vouchers," and other forms of "quasi-money." Typically, there are rules against offering gift cards that expire too quickly, and/or have complicated redemption rules. Before these laws were put into place, merchants would sell gift cards and certificates knowing full-well that many of them would never be redeemed, or would be redeemed too late, etc..
As a result of these "sharp practices," there now exists a large body of law that restricts how gift cards can be issued, and these laws grant consumers strong protection against merchants who wish to attempt to "game" the gift card business.
The laws apply to essentially all merchants, and some on-line merchants appear to not understand this fact. The Law Firm of Audet & Partners, LLP is investigating the following merchants.
