Public reports indicate that Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) is warning against the use of the antibiotic drug Tequin (Gatifloxacin) in diabetic patients after reports of several fatalities. The company is adding a warning for diabetics to the drug's label, as well as strengthening its warning that Tequin can cause both low and high blood sugar levels in patients, the FDA said.FDA advises health care providers to be aware of the following:
• Physicians who use Tequin (Gatifloxacin) should carefully monitor patients for the occurrence of toxicity, particularly to the kidneys, heart or central nervous system and promptly report adverse event information to Bristol-Myers Squibb, the drug manufacturer, or through the FDA Medwatch program.
• Physicians should consider limiting Tequin use to those situations in which the clinical benefit of reduced blood loss is essential to medical management of the patient and outweighs the potential risks.
• FDA is working with the manufacturer of Tequin (Bristol-Myers Squibb) to examine the safety and benefits of Tequin in light of the recent data and the evolving practice of medicine.
