On May 21, 2009 Nutro issued a recall on two varieties of its dry cat food; Nutro dry Natural Choice Complete Care and Nutro Max, with “Best If Used by Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The recall encompasses seven flavors in numerous different packaging sizes. These cat foods have been distributed across all 50 states, and eleven countries. Nutro issued the recall after discovering incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in the recalled products. Nutro claims to have uncovered what they claim is a production mishap in a March 18, 2009 audit of documentation from the Illinois-based supplier of their premix, Trouw Nutrition. Nutro issued the recall three days later on May 21, 2009. Nutro claims to not have received any complaints of illness linked to the recalled food. Yet, according to reports, a number of complaints have been reported by consumer advocacy groups reporting illness in both dogs and cats after eating Nutro foods. The FDA has also reportedly been investigating claims against Nutro. The symptoms range from lethargy to death. Common complaints are vomiting of yellow bile, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, elevated liver enzymes, crystals in urine, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, as well as a disease know as Campylobacter. If you have purchased Natural Choice Complete Care of Nutro Max dry cat food with a “Best if Used by Date” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010 and your pet has experienced vomiting, diarrhea, decrease in appetite, refusal to eat food, lethargy, elevated enzyme levels, or Campylobacter, you may have a claim against Nutro.
