Hydroxycut Recall

On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued a warning to users of Hydroxycut to “immediately stop” use of the product.

Manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences Inc. of Oakville in Ontario, Canada, and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. of Blasdell, N.Y.; Hydroxycut has been removed from shelves due to a possible link to
liver related health problems. According to the FDA at least 9 million packages were sold last year.

Iovate has agreed to pull all Hydroxycut products from the shelves pending further investigation. Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients. According to Vasilios Frankos, director of the FDA's dietary supplement program, the FDA is ‘still unclear as to which ingredients are harmful. The FDA is trying to get a better understanding of what ingredients, or combination of ingredients, is causing the liver damage.’

The recall comes after the FDA received over 23 reports of serious injury. There have also been reports of at least one death. The death occurred in a 19 year old boy from the American southwest in 2007, yet the incident wasn’t reported to the FDA this year. The FDA relies on voluntary reports to detect such problems, and many cases are never reported, officials acknowledge.

The majority of the reported health problems have ranged from jaundice to severe liver damage requiring transplant however other health problems reported include cardiovascular disorders, seizures and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.

Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice, characterized by a yellow tint to the whites of the eyes or skin, brown urine, nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching and loss of appetite.

If you have been taking Hydroxycut dietary supplements and have experienced any of the adverse affects listed above, you may be suffering from Hydroxycut-induced liver damage. You may have a viable claim against the manufacturers of Hydroxycut. The attorneys at Audet and Partners, LLP, will be able to assist you in determining if you may have a case.
