Celexa "Off-Label Use" Law Suit

Celexa is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors" (SSRIs). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural occuring substance found in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems.

Celexa is used to treat depression, and may also be used for other purposes.

A class action was recently filed against the makers of Celexa (Forest Laboratories Inc., Forest Pharmaceuticals ) for unfair competition and false advertising in which the defendants allegedly promoted Celexa for off-label use for depression in pediatric patients even though the FDA had not approved the drug as safe for any use with pediatric patients.

The defendants also allegedly misled physicians by promoting the results of a positive study of pediatric use of the drug while failing to disclose the results of a contemporaneous negative study for the same use. The defendants also allegedly paid kickbacks to doctors to induce them to prescribe the drug.
