The following funeral homes have been connected with the Biomedical Tissue Services Scandal, and are under investigation:
- Louis Garzone Funeral Home, Philadelphia
- Daniel George & Son, Brooklyn
- English Brothers Funeral Home, Brooklyn
- New York Mortuary Service Inc., New York
- Thomas E. Burger Funeral Home in Hilton, New York
- Profetta Funeral Chapel, which has sites in Webster and Irondequoit, New York
- Serenity Hills Funeral Chapel, Rochester, New York
These funeral homes were allegedly involved in a "body-parts-for-money" scheme in which body parts from the recently deceased were "harvested" illegally and sold to various buyers.
At the heart of the alleged ring are Joseph Nicelli, who owned Daniel George & Son funeral home in Brooklyn, and Michael Mastromarino, a former dentist who lost his license. These two allegedly conspired to loot millions of dollars worth of body parts.
News reports also allege that a former BTS employee, Kevin Vickers, said he sliced into dozens of corpses lying inside Louis Garzone's funeral home during the last two months of 2004. He said that after he harvested spines, veins, tendons and bones, he brought them in plastic bags on ice to BTS. A source familiar with the investigation said the Louis Garzone Funeral Home had sold bodies to BTS since the beginning of 2004.
